Kenolbri House, Lancashire

Insulead Fixed Units - Steelyte Opening Casements - Steelyte Compound Units

The Building

The Kenolbri house is a magnificent red brick home that dates back to the 1920’s. The property is situated in the outskirts of Lancashire a county located in the Northwest region of England.

The Brief

Kenolbi house is made up of stone mullions that contained green timber single glazed windows. Its clear that these timber windows were in a poor state of condition and as a consequence made the property suffer from poor thermal efficiency. Another problem with the existing windows was the ongoing maintenance. In order to improve both of these issues Touchstone were contacted to enquire about their Insulead and Steelyte system. It was important to solve these issues without compromising on the slim window sight line.

The Solution

After the initial enquiry and onsite meeting, it was decided that Touchstone’s Insulead and Steelyte system would be used. Touchstones fixed Insulead units can accommodate specialised glass for security, UV filtration, energy conservation and sound inhibition. Along with it’s narrow sightlines of only 22mm, Insulead boosted the property’s thermal performance without damaging the appearance. Touchstone’s Steelyte opening casements are made from high grade stainless steel and have a thermal efficiency (BFRC) rating of A. The open casements were then finished with the hammer handle collection ensuring that the buildings heritage was maintained. As some of the windows didn’t have stone mullions, Touchstone were able to overcome this by using their stainless-steel compound windows. This allows a double opening from the centre of the window. Both the Insulead and Steelyte windows were finished with Albion Crowne glass, and 12mm heritage applied lead. This maintained the buildings original appearance.

The Response

The change from single glazing to double glazing vastly improved the property’s thermal efficiency. By maintaining the same square lead design, it ensured there was no harm to the fabric or value of the property. Both Touchstone and the client were happy with the outcome.
