Stone Cottage, Rutland

Insulead® Fixed Units · Steelyte® opening casements · APPlied square leading

The Building

Situated in Hambleton, Rutland, Stone Cottage is a Grade two listed building which has all the characteristics of an English countryside cottage. This early twentieth centaury build has well coursed rubble walls and a stone tiled roof. The Stone Cottage was to undergo a large renovation but needed to keep in line with the buildings tradition and surrounding area. This beautiful cottage had been left neglected over time but with careful consideration was to become a fantastic British Home once again.

The Brief

The original single glazed lead windows created a traditional appearance but lacked in thermal efficiency. Stone Cottage needed to replicate the applied lead windows but vastly improve their thermal and acoustic performance. Therefore, the specification was to use a 28mm thick double-glazed unit similar to most modern thermal efficient properties. Furthermore, each opening window had to have the narrowest of sight lines to keep in line with tradition and the previous openers.

The Solution

Touchstones solution was to replicate the applied lead design of each window. This meant templating each original window and marking down the thickness of the applied lead and the position of it too. This would ensure a perfect replacement. Touchstone would use their Insulead double glazing system for the fixed windows at Stone Cottage. By using a warm edge spacer bar and a high grade polymer, the windows would not only match the originals but improve Stone Cottages insulation. For the opening windows, Touchstone’s stainless steel Steelyte was the ideal choice due to the sightlines of the unit being only 35mm. All windows were specifically matched like for like but with the addition of a high performing double-glazed unit.

The Response

As always, each window was bespoke and handmade ensuring all windows match the originals. Both Touchstone and the customer was delighted with the outcome. Not only had the appearance of the building been transformed but the double glazing vastly improved the thermal properties. This grade two listed building was able to perform thermally as its modern counterpart by using special double glazing but still remained intact and original as a listed building should be.

Stone Cottage became an enjoyable British home once again.
