Myddelton Lodge, West Yorkshire
INSULEAD® Fixed units · Steelyte® opening casements · APPlied square leading
The building
Myddelton Lodge is a Grade I listed historic residence overlooking Ilkley in West Yorkshire. Set within 5.8 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland, the property features a formal chapel converted into a striking living space with vaulted ceilings, stained glass and original period detailing. The building’s historic significance and original stone mullions, leaded lights and narrow sightlines required an extremely sensitive conservation-led approach.
The Brief
Overton architects approached Touchstone Glazing Solutions to provide replace windows that would improve thermal performance while preserving the character and integrity of the building. Due to the property’s grade, I listed status, all new glazing needs to replicate the appearance of the original windows and comply with strict conservation requirements and listed building consent.
The Solution
Touchstone Glazing Solutions specified its patented Insulead® double glazing system alongside Steelyte® stainless steel opening casements. Designed specifically for heritage and listed buildings, the systems allowed modern thermal efficient glazing to be installed directly into the existing stonework without altering the historic fabric or original appearance.
Working closely with Design Glass Ltd, the project combined traditional craftsmanship with advanced glazing technology to retain the building’s authentic character while improving comfort, reducing condensation and increasing energy efficiency.
A detailed survey identified several structural challenges including cracked stone transoms, damaged mullions and cement filled sections that required careful removal and specialist installation techniques. Through meticulous planning and conservation led workmanship, the installation was completed successfully without the need for additional stone masonry repairs.
The Response
The completed project delivered discreet, high-performance glazing that remains visually in keeping with the original architecture of Myddelton Lodge. By balancing heritage conservation with modern thermal performance, Touchstone Glazing Solutions helped preserve the building for future generations while significantly enhancing comfort and sustainability.
Delivered in collaboration with Overton Architects and Historic England, the project demonstrates how specialist heritage glazing can successfully combine conservation craftsmanship and performance within one of the country’s most protected building categories.
